Biographical Statement
Vicki Denmark is an assistant superintendent for support services with the Fulton County School System. She currently supervises 11 departments in the school system, all of which have programs or services within the system's 19 middle schools. Vicki has been an assistant superintendent for middle school curriculum, a middle school principal, and an assistant principal. If re-elected, she will continue the work the board members and NMSA members have begun in student advocacy, expansion of services to middle level educators, and the development of partnerships with organizations with similar interests and beliefs. During this critical time for middle level education, her expertise and practical knowledge would lend to NMSA's mission and vision.
Briefly describe how, if elected, you would promote NMSA's mission.
NMSA's mission implies that through knowledge and resources, the education of middle school learners will improve and, as a result, produce successful citizens. Success in the Middle, a significant body of research by NMSA, is the guidebook for achieving this important mission. Vicki will continue to work to promote the full adoption of the goals, research findings, and recommendations presented in Success in the Middle. Specifically, she will communicate with the regional members, policymakers, and decision makers about Success in the Middle and other important middle level news.
In light of NMSA's mission, identify one challenge facing middle level education today and give an example of how NMSA could help its members respond to that challenge.
Vicki sees the challenges facing middle level education today as opportunities. The transition of adolescents from elementary to middle and middle to high school is an area in which there are tremendous opportunities to work with the region's members for improvement. It is Vicki's belief that effective transition programs give students the most hope for greater academic and social success during the middle school years and beyond. NMSA, with its plethora of resources and research-based publications, can assist schools in implementing programs that help students improve in school, stay in school, and increase opportunities for post-secondary education.
