School Physical Activity Success Story

Dougherty County School System in Albany, GA

Category: Increasing physical activity in a before or after school program
Grades/number of students: Grades 6 - 8/150+ students participate

Key Changes and Results:

  • Increased physical activity
  • Increased knowledge of nutrition and reading labels
  • Better choices in vending machines
  • Changes in cafeteria to offer healthier options
  • Participation in activities not otherwise available

Keys to Success:

  • Approval from school board and superintendent to administer program to middle schooll students
  • Raised funds from local businesses and individuals
  • Remodeled vacant classroom space into a fitness center
  • Hired personal trainers to work with students after school
  • Partnered with local pediatricians to make referrals and oversee program
